Tour De France on the iPhone

As a former competitive cyclist (WSU Cycling Club) I was really disappointed to find there was no iPhone application for the Tour De France. This post is just an application idea, if you built it maybe you could sell it to the TDF organization, just call up Bernard Hinault I’m sure he’s not busy.

There are principally three kinds of TDF fans, those who want to track results, those who want to follow a rider or a team or a country and those who want to play directeur sportif and pick their own virtual team to compete against their friends.

The style of the the entire application is NOT about watching video or listening to audio coverage it is about tracking the evolving stage in the way they show the time gaps and jersey locations on the bottom of the televised coverage. Now certainly you could tie in video or radio coverage, but I think that is secondary. If I wanted to watch or listen I’d use a better device than my Phone. The real underlying component is replaying what I’ll telemetry data for all the riders. Further this is really just a platform and could be used for all the major tours or any race big enough to have this kind of data and rider tracking infrastructure.

For the event tracker you need the following pieces:

Overall and Stage Standings

Pretty straight forward, list of the riders in the overall standings for all jerseys and team standings for the tour as a whole or an individual stage.

Stage Overview

For each stage a course profile and key stats (length, vertical gain, dates climbs used, any previous winners, etc.)

Stage In Progress

For a stage which is in progress you should show all the break always and chase groups along a zoomable course profile (or overhead map view). Also represented should be all jerseys and any subscribed riders or teams.

This course map should also have a time slider that allows you to scroll through the stage as it evolved showing the riders as they were along the course at various points in time. Sliding your finger across an area of the screen should accomplish this smoothly and continuously (i.e. not just at 4 time intervals, but much much more granular than that more like 100 or a 1000 samples)

NOTE: I’m assuming the Tour actually has this data, I’m not sure how granular it is, can they show is a rider is in the back or the front of the peloton for instance.

$ - In addition to the race info, weather information should be available along the route. This is a good opportunity for a tie in to another iPhone app or data provider or sponsor.

Team Updates and Subscriptions, Rider Profiles and Subscriptions

The obvious rider and team write ups with their race resumes. Subscribing to a rider should show that rider in the Stage in progress views and notify you whenever the rider has a major event like a stage result, break away, mechanical, etc.

$$ Fantasy Tour $$

This is a little more complicated because you need to group people into many virtual tours and let them draft riders and manage their teams. The “exciting” (not to me) thing about other fantasy sports in the ongoing management of the team, picking who to play, etc.You would have to introduce during race team management or trade events in order to do more than have a user pick a team and just watch it evolve. A gamer should chime in here because I am not a gamer.

It might be necessary to have teams organized into specific results (jersey winners) or a just stage wins, or Overall teams with some weighted gain for each jersey, days in jersey an stage wins.

Ok, that’s PeaThink #1 now somebody go build it!

PeaThink

I have a private twitter account that is for friends but I have some ideas for applications and businesses which I’d like to see built so I thought I’d setup a more public forum for that. The long form of that will be here on this blog but short updates can be found on PeaThink via Twitter.

Some of my coming posts will cover:

  • Tour De France iPhone app
  • WA State Fishing Mobile App
  • Sailing\Boating Marketplace and Reviews Idea
  • Review and Feature Comparison Platform

iPhone Review August 2008

I jotted these notes down in August with the idea of writing a review of the iPhone 3G. Well its April and I stand by all of this….

The only thing I would add is that the lack of a keyboard is more annoying now than it ever was. I will never get used to the touch screen keyboard.

My favorite apps are the browser, Evernote and Twittelator

Good

  • AppStore - Native apps are great
  • Separation of Podcasts from Music
  • iTunes U - This is a really good idea have not listened to any yet
  • It pretty much just works
  • GPS integration for apps is awesome
  • Browser is pretty much perfect
  • Opening Excel worked flawlessly, scrolling and zooming (iPhone's premier feature) was great on a large worksheet.

Bad

  • No "Back" experience
  • Apps\web pages always reload every time
  • Reminders cleared when you unlock phone, no snooze
  • Calendar items appear as unaccepted when you open them on your calendar
  • The coverage seems more spotty than with my old phone, but that hasn't been very impactful

When a Browser is release…

IT departments crap themselves… Here’s the warning my IT department sent out:

IMPORTANT NOTICE!

Microsoft released Internet Explorer Version 8.0 (IE8) this week. Be advised that IE8 is *not* supported by <company name> IT at this time. Extensive testing and validation with the multitude of browser-sensitive enterprise applications used at <company name> is required before we can effectively support this latest release.

A Hotfix to enable IE8 to work with <company name>’s production HTTP\SSL VPN infrastructure is not due for release by <company name> Product Development until next month.

Bottom line: Installation of IE8 on an <company name> PC (or a PC you use for <company name>business) is at your own risk. Please do not contact the IT Help Desk with browser-related issues if you have installed this upgrade. We will provide regular updates on this topic as we learn more about the product.

Testing blockquotes

I'm testing how block quotes look on Google Reader. One of the blogs I read does this and they are silver on white... horrid.

Hmmm. I can only seem to indent the text Her'es the exact HTML from the guys code.. looks like crap here as I edit it too.

"Virginia OT Eugene Monroe had a solid workout today in Charlottesville. The 6-foot-5 3/8, 312-pounder kept all of his workout numbers from the combine, but he did position drills and looked very good. Cincinnati Bengals offensive line coach Paul Alexander, who has been everywhere there has been a tackle, orchestrated the position drills, and two other o-line coaches also were in attendance." - Gil Brandt

Let's see what's happen on Reader.... Probably its the color tag...

New Jersey Baby

New Jersey Historical Maps

http://mapmaker.rutgers.edu/MAPS.html

Taking a geographic trip through the history of New Jersey just got much easier, courtesy of the Rutgers University Cartographic Services. There's really something for everyone here, as the site contains over 150 maps that cover glacier movements, historical county boundaries, early city maps and plans, and historical railroad maps. The site doesn't have a search engine, so visitors may have to browse around for a bit to find what they are looking for here. One collection that is definitely worth a look is "The Changing Landscape of New Jersey". Here, visitors can click on a specific county, which will lead them to a set of diverse maps complete with a brief set of facts about each county. Also included for each county are links to the county's historical society (if available), other historical collections for the county, and a helpful article entitled "A Historian's tips to students researching local history".

  • Took a rigging class from Brion Toss Riggers
  • Finished Condo Remodel
  • Made a solar powered Theremin at Dorkbot and learned to solder in the process

Stay At Home Post-Holiday Friday

Back of left lower extremity.

Image via Wikipedia

I’ve been pretty banged up since Santarchy where Dawn and I had a great time but I managed to pull my hamstring pretty badly. The past 3 days a bruise has been surfacing and its grown from the size of a quarter to about 5 inches around and its swollen. I was going to go see the ND today at Bastyr but they were closed. I know I need some more time with the acupuncturist some needles and cupping will fix me right up!

Anyway, so since then I’ve been keeping on the down-low, when I do go out its only to go someplace and sit. Christmas eve for instance Dawn, Rahul and I went to see It’s A Wonderful Life. I am pretty sure I’ve never seen that movie all the way through. We saw the 10pm show at the Seven Gables theater which is a tiny little art house theater in the U District. It was a lot of fun to be out that night after being coupled up because of the snow and to see a great movie that about hope and human spirit.

XMas Day Dawn, Rahul, Divide, Jacqueline, Anna, Leanne all went to Jade Garden - International District - Seattle, WA and a few of us went to Linda's Tavern - Capitol Hill - Seattle, WA for drinks which was packed.

Today I was pretty wiped out and my leg was throbbing a bit, but I’m back in chore mode. I did some work on my finances, very depressing declines in my 401K, but I won’t see that money for awhile anyway. I also paid some web bills, domain renewals, SSL certs, etc. I wish I could have done some work on the boat this weekend, but the leg won’t allow. I’m hoping that over the new year I’ll be able to do some of that.

I hope you’re having a great holiday! Talk with you soon!

Movie Review – The Day The Earth Stood Still

Dawn and I took a lovely wintery snowy walk over to the Neptune Theater in the U District to see The Day The Earth Stood Still. First let me tell you that it is DAMN icy out there, especially in the corners and even on well worn streets like Roosevelt and 40th. Its 28F at the Dinghy right now and I have no intention of attempting to drive tomorrow morning. In the afternoon it might be very passable, but its only supposed to be 26F (colder than it is now) tomorrow.

The movie itself was pretty good. I have never seen the original which focused on Nuclear war and not people’s impact on the earth, but I could easily see how that plot line would have fit into the movie. The story was simple but impactful. Keanu Reeves does his “Neo” type role really well. Its a bit of a type cast for him but I wish I had a problem like that. ;-) If you like movies with a little bit of SciFi but with a human underpinning you’ll like this. If you’re a diehard Green you’ll leave with much to think about. If you drive a Hummer you’ll probably run over an endangered species on your way home.

You don’t have to see this in the theater though, if you have a decent home TV setup you will experience the film just fine there. For comparison, a James Bond or a Terminator movie have to be seen on the 20 foot screen. If you want to get out of the house its worth the ticket and popcorn money.
